The rocks on the barn that rocks

Regarding your cover story, "This barn rocks" (Fall 2007), I love the stone trim used on the pillars of the Goriuk/Kroeger barn. Can you provide me with some details about the stone used? Can you help me locate the supplier?

The barn's designer, Ernest Neudorf of Envision Design Works Inc., tells us this material is a manufactured stone veneer called Eldorado Stone. The name is Fieldledge, in a colour called Adante. "Eldorado makes a wide range of stone products and we've been impressed with the quality," says Neudorf. "We would recommend it for any construction project."

Eldorado's website is www.eldoradostone.com/flashsite/main.html.

Hazardous geothermal?

Concerning your story about geothermal energy (Fall 2007), an air-heat-pump salesman told me that geothermal energy installations are a potential environmental hazard. If the pipes carrying the thermal fluid ever spring a leak, there could be mixing of fluids in primary and secondary circulation systems. Any rebuttals?

Jim Bolger of Earth FX Energy, one of the sources for our story, responds: "That salesperson is using good old-fashioned fear mongering as part of the sales pitch. There is only one circulation system for a geothermal installation. It contains a mixture of water and food-grade ethanol (corn liquor) that acts as environmentally friendly antifreeze. If the pipes were accidentally severed or punctured, the liquid would dissipate to the surface and evaporate. The pipes would then have to be excavated and exposed at the break point and fused back together, and the system would have to be recharged. This process might be an inconvenience, but certainly not an environmental hazard."

Old carpeting for weed control

My brother came across your magazine in a restaurant, and told me you had a story about using carpet flipped upside down to control weeds. He went back to look at the magazine and it was gone. I would greatly appreciate finding out more about this article: I'm disabled and it would make my life so much easier! I've been checking out your website and you have an excellent magazine. It is so versatile and informative.

The tip about using recycled carpeting to control weeds is from our garden columnist, Jennifer Bennett. She discussed her strategy to keep weeds out of the edging between lawn and flowerbed in our Spring 2007 issue.
